Last autumn – and I am blaming Smoov for this – I bought a Braun Silk-épil epilator. Three months on, what do I think about my purchase, and Smoov's advice?

I was apprehensive at first, I admit. It did help that I had already been waxing my legs with wax strips for a few weeks, so I was used to the pain of many hairs being pulled out at the same time.
With an epilator it is different: you almost feel the individual hairs being plucked, but – and this is the key thing – the pain is less at any one time. Of course it does continue for longer at this lower intensity.
The most painful places are in the groin area and under the buttocks also the backs and (to lesser extent) the fronts of the knees. On my shins, calves, thighs and flanks I barely feel a thing.
I have been epilating two or three times a week because you always miss some and the new hairs do grow back, though being young they are very fine and hurt less to remove.
I found it is important to learn the direction in which the hairs grow, and move the epilator against the grain, so to speak. Some hairs obediently grow downwards, some grow upwards and some (perverse ones) even grow around the legs. The ones on the tops of the knees grow straight out! I am not sure what effect if any prolonged tights wearing has on the direction of hair growth. That's a subject for a PhD thesis in hoseology sometime.
The epilator has a 'natural daylight' spotlight to illuminate the area being treated. You can spot hairs to be grabbed more easily by looking at the outline of the legs against the daylight, though the spotlight is quite useful when daylight is not available. It does not really look like natural daylight – it is too blue, like a halogen light.
My Braun Silk-épil also came provided with an ice pack and an easy starter head: I must admit I have used neither. I must admit that I have not been anywhere really scary with the epilator, nor do I intend to. The only places that I still shave are my neck and under my arms. I think I will continue to do that. The epilator will be just for my legs!
Altogether I think the epilator has been a good investment, even though I do not use half of the accessories.
I suppose I had better add a couple of words on the downside of epilating.
I started having my legs waxed around 4 1/2 years ago. The main reason for
doing this, is that I was exceptionally hairy and I do a lot of running and
road cycling - it was very uncomfortable to wear tight fitting sprint
shorts or cycling shorts/tights. In fact I do the same on my arms,
underarms and back - the reason for this is that I also wear a wet suit
most Sundays in the summer whilst I'm out jet skiing off the South Coast. I
now epilate my legs about once every 2 weeks. It is now a lot easier and
the hair is around 90% reduced in growth rate, very fine and the ingrowing
hairs/red lumps are almost non-existant after 4 1/2 years or so. The only
itchyness that I USED to get was after 7 days, regrowth would start and it
would be itchy to sit down say when say driving - this would go after a day
or so.
I have been using an epilator for years and I will be the first to say what
a wonderful device they are. I just recently switched to .... After doing a
little research I found that ... has beeen around for 20 years and
actually invented the first epilator.
Sarah, thanks for the info. I've never heard of roots only having 7-8 hairs
in a lifetime. I guess time will show whether or not that is true.
