Here is the english translation of an article I found in Libération's website, a french newspaper :
"Finding tights beyond size 4 used to be an almost impossible mission, to the despair of "fuller figure" ladies. However, more than one woman in five wears clothes in size 48 (UK size 20) or more. Stepping cautiously, three brands set themselves up in this promising XXL market : DIM, the brand with the biggest market share, along with Chesterfield have just launched a few models that go up to size 6, even in opaque, which is according to Chesterfield more fashionable. On the other hand, Gerbe, who have been "pestered" by customers of their website, go even further with a specific range called "Extreme", consisting of 2 lines, available by the end of September: tights in sizes 6 to 8, i.e. roughly from 52/54 (UK 24-26) to 60/62 (UK 32-34) in dress sizes."
Thanks to Geraden for his help in the translation of the text and the correspondance between the french and british size systems.
I found this article interesting for the reason that if there is certainly a need for some fuller figure women to find tights in their sizes, I can't prevent myself from thinking that the three manufacturers quoted in the above article created these lines in order to kill two birds with one stone. On one hand, they satisfy this particular part of their female clientele, on the other hand they take in account the bigger and bigger male market share that Internet has revealed.
I must also inform the reader that two of the above brands mentionned in the article, DIM and Chesterfield, are actually ran by the same manufacturer, Chesterfield's tights being in general cheaper than DIM's. I want to mean that the new size policy has no reason to diverge, one brand from the other one.
For your information, I enclose the links of the above mentionned companies websites :
DIM : www.dim.fr (in french)
Chesterfield, as far as I know, has no website.
Gerbe : www.gerbe.fr (in french or in english - select the appropriate flag. You can even order online.). Talking about the "extreme" line, here are the photos of these products :
