Continuing the personal hosiery story of Mike (Lycra One). His employer's dress code states: "Shorts may be worn with hosiery". Mike sees a possibility here ...

Back to the company dress code. I was still wearing openly in my off work times, hanging out with people from work. Guys, girls, married, single, we all just hung out together, and had great times. I’d mention things to them when it was hot, “Not fair that you get to wear shorts,” and things like that. Just sewing my little seeds here and there. I remember ‘losing’ a bet once and wearing shorts and hose to work, and everyone had a great time with it. It was perfectly planned on my part, as my boss (from Corporate – another location) and HIS boss were going to be in that day. Everyone knew it, and that was part of the ‘bet.’ “You’re going to wear pantyhose in front of Bill and Larry?!! No freakin’ way!!”
Well that day was a milestone. The two big guys said, “Hey why are you wearing shorts today?” I tugged at the nylon and said, “I’m within the dress code” Insert blank looks here. Then I explained the bet, and my team (the folks that worked for me) were there to fill in all the blanks. I was told I must have a pretty big set to wear pantyhose like that. I told them it’s no big deal, really. Wink.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and I am in the corporate offices. I would wear black sheers under my dress pants no socks and dress shoes. Men's dress socks are sheer anyway. Always thought that would bust me. Anyway, we’re in a meeting with Human Resources, my boss and others on mine and his level. My boss brought up the previous encounter with me in pantyhose and shorts, “following the dress code.” What came out of the HR department leaders mouth just about dropped me to the floor. “That is perfectly acceptable as long as he doesn’t wear skirts and heels too.” Silence. Then laughter. This is where a normal hose wearing dude would speak up and say, “Cool, I’m going to start tomorrow.” I didn’t. I chickened out like I used to when I couldn’t get out of my car in shorts and hose. Pantyhose were still VERY taboo in my mind. Crossdressing even. I didn’t want to push it, but I knew damn well that the door had just been opened. One nice thing about a company that big – they really can’t discriminate.
The only nice thing, but I digress.
When I got back to my office I had a meeting with my team to catch them up on everything while I was gone. I had scored a HUGE account in California and had to be out of there the next day, so we were going to be in that meeting a while, catching up, planning, etc. Here it is, my first step. It was really warm in the conference room and I mentioned the pantyhose and shorts discussion with HR. Everyone chuckled, but I brought them around. “Wouldn’t you guys love to be able to wear shorts? I mean really, the women do it every day. I can tell you from experience (losing the bet is all they know) that pantyhose aren’t that bad and they beat the heck out of long pants.” The discussion goes on, and we take a break. I call HR at Corporate. She fires off an e-mail saying it’s OK. Copies my boss. Holy crap. What have I done?
I go to California in long pants for three days. (Except at my hotel and in the evenings) Besides, this customer was a suit and tie environment anyway. I get home on a Friday and have all weekend to stew over whether or not I am going to wear pantyhose and shorts to work on Monday.
Monday morning I walk out of the house with khaki shorts and suntan hose on. I brought my ‘you are such a chicken’ long pants with me. Got to work, said the hell with it, and went in. There were a few comments, but mostly “I bet that’s a lot more comfortable.” (our building wasn’t known for the best A/C) A couple of the guys around the building (about 100 employees in all) would try it from time to time. Once they learned that shaving their legs was part of making them not itch, they’d run away, no way they’re removing their fur. For the most part I was the only guy in shorts and hose, but every once in a while, someone would do it, especially on hot days. I didn’t care, I was IN!!
The only thing my boss ever said was not to wear in front of our clients, or at our corporate management meetings. That’s cool with me.
But this meant that I was wearing shorts and hose. I still hung out with my friends from work after hours. Going to bars, etc. I had to summon up courage, a lot of it, because even though I am wearing hose at work they’re still taboo in my head for some reason. But time went on and the only conversations about my hose after the first week were to give me gentle ribbing or tell me I had a run. Fun stuff. Good stuff. And the general public as a whole did not notice and or care. Pantyhose were accepted on a man. Truly amazing, I thought.
The thoughts of taboo started to fade. And I owe that to two things, experience and this forum. Experience told me I could do it, this forum told me that I was not the only one, that I’m not a freak, that I have friends here to support me.
