I did it! I actually did it!
I never thought I would, but I have, and guess what – I lived to tell the tale!
"Come on Ger, what are you wittering on about?"
Well I was telling you, wasn't I? I have been in shorts and tights among people I have known for ten years. They have not known that I wear. To cut a long story short, I went to a rehearsal of my local choral society wearing M&S light support in natural tan, with white sports socks and trainers. On top I wore light grey-blue over the knee shorts and a blue t-shirt. I must admit I nearly chickened out and put long trousers on, but I forced myself out of the door with my music and into the car before I could get cold feet.
I really wasn't sure what would happen, whether anyone would notice or anything be said. I sit next to a larger-than-life Scot, who is guaranteed to make a bluff comment on anything out of the ordinary in a loud Glasgow accent. I was anticipating something along the lines of "Weel laddie, it looks like ye have polished yerr legs weel this afterrnoon, but ye seem to be wearrrin the polishin rrag"
What he actually said was "Weel laddie, it looks like yerr driessed ferr summerr alrreedy" – obviously he had spotted the shorts (canny, these Scots!) but not the hose (maybe not so canny after all!).
The 'short' of it is, that no one appeared to notice, or look twice at my legs, and certainly there were no comments. So I got a nice drive to the rehearsal in shorts and tights, and a bit of a buzz at the rehearsal wondering what would happen.
So now I have worn openly in front of my friends in the choral soc and they still don't know that I wear. I may well do the same again.
People see what they expect to see. The do not expect to see a man in tights, so they don't. The day that people expect to see a man in tights, they will see it all right, but it won't matter any more, because that will be the day our cause is won!
Oh and the concert went well – I wore evening dress, with 20 den Oroblu Magie tights in singapour (a 'barely black' colour) and no socks. Did anyone notice? What do you think? If you would like to comment on this entry, please click on the 'Comments' link below.
Well done Geraden. It was obviously a challenge for you, but you didn't let
that stop you. Is there anywhere you won't go in shorts 'n' tights now?
Well, work, I guess, but only because they wouldn't allow shorts, I bet.
