The mystery tights contest is now closed. I had three answers in the end.

No one has got the answer right, so I will just have to keep the prize myself. By the way I have now decided that the prize will be a year's supply of Wolford Tights! Yes, life is tough!
Ok, so what is the answer?
The tights are BHS Brilliant Opaques.
Don't look for them on the shelves, they have long gone. They were sold off about 15 years ago at half price for £3.00. I have not got the packaging, so I don't have all the details. I know they are 50 denier, and came in black, dark blue, emerald green and burgundy. I have one pair in black and one in blue left. They have a sewn on waistband and are fully seamed from waist to toe. This is not artificial seaming, they really were made that way. As a result the toe is rather pointed, as you could see in the picture. They are fully shaped (boarded is the correct term, I believe). My only dislike about them is that the waistband is a little tight, but that probably just proves that I should lose a bit of weight!
The fabric, which must contain 10-15% lycra at a guess, is incredibly soft, slippery and shiny. These are the most frictionless tights I have ever worn. The inside is dull and matt by comparison, and is a slightly paler colour for some reason. The only other thing I know is that they were made in France for BHS (which was probably still calling itself British Home Stores in those days).
I have to admit that I have never seen any tights anything like them. Some nylon lycra leggings might come fairly close in appearance, but they are usually well over 100 denier. These tights are 50. And no, they are not for sale.
Apparently Wolford used to make tights very similar to the BHS ones that I
have described. The Wolford ones retailed for over £20. The chain stores do
not make something like that unless they perceive that there is a market
for it, so it is quite likely that the BHS Brilliant Opaques are a copy of
something that Wolford had brought out.
