I wrote a few weeks ago about my efforts to buy some Spanx tights in the Sale at House of Fraser, and how, thanks to a misleading package label I ended up with size B when I wanted size E. I did get my money back however.
Well Spanx do not have a monopoly on the footless tights market. The other day I was passing a stock disposal warehouse in Birmingham. I decided to look inside and see what hosiery there was. It was all a bit disappointing, mainly cheap brands that no one has ever heard of, from the bottom end of the market. Ones that I would not buy if you paid me to.
But I did spot something that interested me. The brand was Little Secret, made in Brazil. They had a range of shaping products including briefs and long leg panties. While these were not hosiery, they were clearly constructed like hosiery. Then there was what I can only describe as a shaping body tube designed to cover the whole body from under arms to below the hips. It was knitted in quite heavy nylon and lycra without seams, but with a complicated structure that left me guessing not only which way up it was supposed to go bit also which way round as well.
However there was one Little Secret product that could fairly be described as hosiery. Called 'Capri Slimming and Firming Pants', they are quite similar to the Spanx tights that I had tried to buy. A flat seamed, gusseted control top goes down to mid thigh level, then turns into a sheer hose that finishes in a cuff. TheseLittle Secret products were priced at £6.99 with a red cross indicating half marked price.
I bought a pair of these Capri tights to try out, in beige and size Large, the only colour and size that were available. (Large is described as dress size 16/18: if I wore dresses, which I don't, 18 would be about my size.)
The body and thigh section is heavy nylon-lycra with a quite powerful stretch factor, but not uncomfortable to wear. The lycra content is 20%. The panty reaches up to waist height or just a little above. The sheer leg is a nice sleek hose with a good feel to it. In my case it reached to mid calf: a person with shorter legs would probably find that it reached to the ankle.
I do like to feel nylon down to my toes, but these were nevertheless quite nice to wear. A pair of knee-highs will easily compensate where these fall short.
