In the US it's illegal to be dressed indecently, but not illegal to crossdress. Also, where would you draw the line? Some people might claim that all the boys wearing girls skinny jeans are crossdressing.
~ Rod ~
is it legal to crossdress when outside as a female
~ Andy M ~
epilators have been suggested. I've just bought a Braun and done my first epilate session. So far so good, but still a long way from hair free legs (which are essential for any tights wearing!!!)
~ Adrian ~
With winter on the way I shall be cutting down on heating bills by wearing opaque tights with a wool kilt.

@badleg: Try Elbeo Sheer Magic or Elbeo Caresse. Size XL is available. They really do help...

Ordered some tights from Emilio Cavallini, they're great! Good stretch, warm, opaque. Good replacement for my regular sock-wearing.

Hosiery Museum

posted Tuesday, 7 August 2007

Geradenby Geraden

I spotted a new link on tightsfashion.co.uk to a site which advertises its subject matter as

The history of ladies hosiery from the turn of the twentieth century to the present day.

From a brief visit to the site, I can see that the pages are maintained by a knowledgeable enthusiast and are (like this site!) clean and informative.  The site has apparently been going since April 2007.

Under the objectives of the site we find the following statement:

Today hosiery is seen more as an accessory than an essential item of clothing, a few decades ago if a lady stepped out of her house not wearing a pair of nylon stocking then she would be considered improperly dresses. Whilst I am not saying we should return to those days I do think hosiery history is an important part of fashion history which is worth remembering for future generations.

There are one or two typos on the site (you will see one in the above paragraph) but these are compensated for by the good quality of the content and the care with which it has been put together.  There are historical pictures, vintage packages and nostalgia-inducing advertisements, as well as quite a lot of interesting information, including history and a glossary of terms. More content is promised in due course.

The site owner gives little personal information, but I get the impression that he is a man. He says:

For many years sheer hosiery has fascinated me, there are many different aspect about hosiery which all come together, this is what makes hosiery so interesting in my opinion, for example it's how the big industrial machines in factories are used to product such a fine and delicate item, the years of development which has gone into hosiery to make it the item we see and are familiar with today along with the associated fashion history which lies behind hosiery.

The other part I find very intriguing is ladies attitudes toward hosiery which can be very different some enjoy wearing hosiery others are indifferent even some ladies hate hosiery.

Along with how hosiery is worn today, the more you look into this subject the more you find.

I decided to share my interest of hosiery and produce this web site  Museum of ladies hosiery and show you what I mean.

I find it curious that the author (particularly if I am right in thinking he is a man) did not originally raise or  the subject of the growing market for male wearers, though he does say

Attitudes toward hosiery today are changing.

However within 24 hours of this blog entry being published, the Curator of the Hosiery Museum has inserted a section in the Museum on hosiery for men, entitled

A new potential large market for hosiery.

Well done for that! All in all the site is worth a look - most of us will find out something we did not know before.

Here is the link:

Enjoy.

I do take on board the point that I have not included anything about men wearing hosiery today, as it's been the museum is less than 6 months old it's just a time issue as the subject generally so big. If any of you want to send in your experience of wearing hosiery then I be pleased to publish one or two of these as long as it's suitable to be read by all ages. I would also like to know where you thing the opposition to men wearing hosiery comes from is it from other men or ladies. along with general attitudes about men and hoisery. You can get in contact by using the email page. Thank you Curator :- Museum of hoisery.

Hi Curator, and welcome to my site. You were quicker off the mark that I was in finding your site!

It seems that we have interests that overlap, and we share an approach that is clean and 'family friendly'. I am pleased to see that you have no ideological reason for not mentioning male hosiery wearing on your site! I have found in the past that that I have made approaches to sites and been rebuffed because 'this site is not about men wearing hosiery' with the unspoken addition 'and we don't want to put off the ladies from wearing, do we?'

If you want to extend your coverage to include male hosiery wearing, you will find plenty of relevant material on this site and in the sites I link to. Possibly the best background can be found on Wikipedia: Pantyhose for Men. You may also find my own story of interest.

Congratulations on your site, I know from experience it is not easy!
