Geraden's Tips No. 3
To stop ladders (runs) in sheer hosiery, a less unsightly solution than pink nail varnish (and we all carry that, don't we?) is to use an aerosol spray that glues the fabric together.
You can buy products such as Run-Stop which, by the way, you use when the tights are being worn. Such purpose-made products come in dinky 10cc lipstick-sized containers that (per cc) cost a small fortune. Ok for the girls to put in their handbags, but there is a cheaper solution.
Artist's fixative (for charcoal or pastel drawings) comes in larger canisters. Mine holds 150cc and cost less than a fiver. (150cc of Run Stop at £1.99 for 10cc is, let me see, a touch under £30). This kind of fixative is therefore a much cheaper alternative to proprietary ladder stopping products.
It is not as strong as nail varnish - it wont work on the site of a major pull (but then if you have a major pull that has laddered, you probably want get rid of the tights anyway). But for a small ladder that is beginning around a seam or in the toe area, a squirt of fixative can extend the life of your hosiery and pay for itself quite quickly. To be on the safe side, apply liberally, and reapply after each wash.

For mending runs or ladders, I use liquid skin, a liquid bandage which is
very similar to nail polish. I already had some in the first aid
supplies, tried it, and love the way it works!
