As I travelled to work the other day I was thinking about what I was wearing. What I wear for work is determined by two things – the organisation's dress code and my personal preferences. I work for a government agency which has a professional dress code – no shorts, sandals, flip-flops, baseball caps and that sort of thing. Nothing is said about hosiery. The agency did try to impose a collar and tie rule for men but made the mistake of not imposing the equivalent (a hosiery rule) for women. Consequently the rule was thrown out by the courts as discriminatory against men.
So dress for work has to be smart and professional, but not necessarily formal.
Yesterday I wore trousers and a jacket, a shirt and tie. I wore black shoes but no socks; underneath my trousers I had on a pair of near-black sheer tights. (Oroblu Magie 20 den, colour: singapour.) My ankles were visible for anyone who cared to look.
I recall that a couple of years ago I was chatting with Barney in a hosiery chat room and he was telling that he had been wearing something similar. He had just been asked by a female colleagues if he was wearing tights. And so his secret had come out. I suppose that means I must be ready for my secret to come out at work?!
Looking back, it has been a long road from the days when I first wore tights to work. In those days I wore secretly, under trousers and long socks to make sure there was no chance of anyone ever catching a glimpse of nylon. I would wear socks over sheers and opaques alike, and with opaques I used to make sure that my socks were the same colour as the tights, just in case the socks were not quite long enough.
Then a couple of years ago I stopped wearing socks with opaques. With sheers I switched to knee high or ankle high opaques instead of socks. I liked the cooler feel on my feet. It is healthier too, I am sure.
A bit later on I stopped wearing socks with sheers too, but I made sure the sheers were matt skin-tone, so it looked as though I simply had bare legs. I started wearing nylon foot-socks to protect the tights from rubbing on my shoes. I wear black with opaques and beige ones with sheers.
Finally in recent weeks I have just worn whatever sheer tights I like, whether they are obvious to someone looking at my ankles or not.
When I wear opaques, I quite often do what the girls do, take off my shoes. The feeling of freedom is great! I have not yet done so when wearing sheers, however. The only things I have not worn and do not intend to wear at work are very high gloss sheers or fishnets. I have however worn diamond opaques and ribbed tights.
To the majority of people, tights are just an article of clothing. Why do we men get so anxious about wearing them? Isn't it all in our heads?

Yes, it is strange how self-conscious I am when I wear tights without
socks. However, I seem to become less aware the more often I wear them like
this. I have some 90% cotton tights that I have completely forgotten about
until bedtime. Depending on what I'm doing, I can more or less forget about
opaques.
